Positive Behavior Supports

 The Loup City Public Schools has adopted Positive Behavior Supports (PBS) as a K-12 program for the 2013-14 school year. PBS is a process for creating safer and more effective schools. Essentially, the belief of the administration and staff members is that together we can establish common expectations for student behavior. Together we can provide a framework to teach, reinforce and reward the behaviors that we believe will both help all students learn and give them a life skill that is essential to success.

 PBS includes schoolwide expectations and procedures intended for all students and all staff in all settings. A copy of the schoolwide expectations will be sent home. Posters will be displayed throughout the school. Our goal is LIVING ABOVE THE LINE.

Student Responsibility

Students are expected to show Above the Line behaviors in these categories:  Be SAFE, Be RESPECTFUL, Be RESPONSIBLE. Those students who use appropriate behaviors will receive positive recognition and feedback. If a student makes a bad behavior choice and falls Below the Line, the student will be expected to assume responsibility for the behavior. Those students who use inappropriate behaviors will be given additional opportunities to learn appropriate behaviors and fix their behavior.

 Staff Responsibility

 As part of our PBS process, staff members will use evidence-based practices to increase student learning and decrease classroom disruptions. To help students Live Above the Line, staff members will do the following when teaching academics and behavior:

 

  • Constantly teach and refer to our school-wide expectations.
  • Provide students with more praise than correction
  • Talk to students with respect using positive voice tone.
  •  Actively engage everyone in the class during instruction
  •  Use pre-correcting, prompting, and redirecting as we teach
  • Look for the positive first and provide positive, immediate, frequent, and explicit feedback.

 Parent Responsibility

 We would like parent input and involvement. Please consider the following:

  • Review the PBS information that comes home with your child
  • Ask your child, “What are the rules in your school?” “How do you follow those rules?” “What happens when a teacher sees you following the rules?
  • Talk to your child about the expectations at school and the importance of continuing to demonstrate Above the Line behaviors.
  • Label your expectations at home into the same categories:  Be SAFE, Be Respectful, Be Responsible.
  • Use the Above the Line language with your child regarding expected behaviors at home.
  • Watch for more information about PBS.
